Seeing God in Your Child
And He said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? - Luke 2:49
In Luke 2:41-50, Joseph, Mary, Jesus, and others had gone to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. At its conclusion they began their journey home. After travelling for a day, Mary and Joseph realized that Jesus, who was only twelve years old, was not with them. They returned to Jerusalem, found Him in the temple, and scolded Him. His response in verse 49 indicates that He was confused as to why they would look for him and not recognize His need to be there.
Parenting is difficult. Most of us teach, train, and protect as best we can. Yet, we are human and miss it sometimes. We may fail to recognize the call of God in our children’s lives and their interest in it. Even if we were informed as Mary was (Luke 1:26-38) we may not expect to see evidence until they reach adulthood. However, we must be mindful that their purpose was determined before they were conceived (Jeremiah 1:5), and it may begin to manifest in their childhood.
So, as mothers we must pray and ask God to show us who our children are and how to encourage and direct them along that vein. Our influence is powerful; therefore, we should be careful to not underestimate them while they are young. This way, we can work with God, help them become their best, and fulfill their God-given purpose.
Have a wonderful Mother’s Day!
