Deplete the police?
In the wake of recent tragedies (as of June 2020), some are demanding that police departments are defunded or dismantled. From the first time I heard it, it bothered me. This is my personal opinion on the matter.
Don't completely destroy what's not a complete enemy. As it has been said so many times, all police officers are not bad. I feel safe in saying most are not. So, it doesn't make sense to me to take such an extreme approach. It could result in putting many good people out of work, not to mention leaving many without law enforcement. I don't mean to downplay the situation, but I think of the way I handle a piece of fruit or vegetable. If I find a rot spot, I don't throw the whole fruit or vegetable away. I cut the rot spot out and keep what's good. I think that's what should be done in this case.
This situation screams for a quick fix to avoid any more loss of life or brutality. However, we have to accept that this is going to take time. It will take time to thoroughly investigate and identify the "rot spots". It may require dialogue with people whom we'd rather not deal with. Whatever it takes, we have to be willing to make the sacrifice. There's no one answer for every department. The solution will not come overnight.
Honestly, I think this is an attempted power move coming out of emotion. Protestors gained a little ground and got the attention of those in authority. That's a good thing. However, once you get the platform or the microphone in your hand, what will you say or do? I think some have reacted too quickly and are making the wrong demands. I suggest giving it a little time to get emotions in check and really think about what you're asking for. Definitely, changes need to be made. However, this is not the way.
