Water for Your Thirst

The woman saith unto Him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. – John 4:15

We all get thirsty. It is completely natural. The question is how do you handle thirst? Do you drink something healthy? Do you drink enough of it? There are many options available. Just as we have physical thirst, there is also spiritual and emotional thirst. The same question applies; how do you handle it? Possibly without realizing it, we find ways to quench our thirst, or fill our voids. Some are healthy and wholesome while others are destructive. For example, some people find satisfaction in volunteering and doing community service. Others resort to excessive shopping or overindulgence in alcohol. Our choices can run the gamut.

In John 4, Jesus encounters a woman coming to a well to get natural water. He offers her spiritual water which equates to a personal relationship with Him and living in our purpose. The truth is knowing Him helps us to identify our thirst and righteous ways to quench it. This does not mean being super spiritual. But we sometimes develop behaviors, habits, or even addictions that we do not realize are unhealthy, will not acknowledge are unhealthy, or cannot get free from. With the Lord’s help we can learn to find fulfillment in an acceptable manner. In John 4:14 we see the benefits of allowing the Lord to minister to and teach us.

  • Your thirst will be forever quenched. Whereas natural water only provides temporary satisfaction, spiritual water (or a relationship with Him) brings peace that does not end.

  • You will have a well within. You will no longer need to look to external sources for happiness, like approval from others or drugs. His spirit will live inside and keep you in any situation.

  • He brings everlasting life. Everything about a relationship with the Lord has a positive impact on your life now and throughout eternity. His ways empower you to overcome any obstacle you face.

So, know that being thirsty is not an issue. It is a matter of how you relieve it. We all have spent, at least, part of our lives handling it the wrong way. If you know you need change, also know that there is an answer. There is water that permanently satisfies.
