Moses was to lead the Israelites through the wilderness to the Promised Land. However, the Israelites repeatedly rebelled, spoke against God, and him. Many times God spoke to Moses as He did in Exodus 32:10. Because of the Israelites behavior, God wanted to separate Moses from them and make him a great nation. Moses always interceded for them, and God would yield to Moses. However, what Moses did not seem to realize is the problem did not go away. The Israelites behavior did not get any better. Eventually, God told Moses that He would not consume them, but they would not go into the Promised Land (Numbers 14:23). So, Moses is stuck with them in the wilderness. Finally, the same people for whom he had interceded made him so angry that he disobeyed God. Because of his disobedience, God told him that he would not go into Canaan either (Numbers 20:7-12). Moses allowed the Israelites to pull him down with them. He missed the Promised Land because he remained connected to them.
Moses was trying to fulfill his calling. But, sometimes you have to recognize when it’s time to refocus. God has given us free-will. We can do what we want. The people connected to you don’t always do what they’re supposed to. It’s important to know when to cut people off and not allow them to cause you to miss great opportunities. Moses did not know that his responses to God would lead to his failure. He didn’t seem to recognize who God is and He knows what’s best. If Moses only had another chance and knew the right way to respond. He could have spared his soul so much anguish. The lesson is: sometimes, the problem is not you. The problem is who you're with.
