How is your hearing?

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: - James 1:19

Understanding is necessary for the maintenance of peace. One way to obtain understanding is to hear and listen. Hearing allows us to observe and take in. We can listen to not only words or sounds, but tone, mannerisms and the like. It is important to listen with an open mind and not allow our interpretation to be affected by outside influences. Also, while in this mode, hopefully, we have the chance to ask clarifying questions. Hearing and listening effectively helps determine the next steps correctly.

Once we speak or act out of wrath, then what is said is said, and what is done is done. We can apologize if our words or actions are wrong, however nothing can be taken back. This is why we should be slow to move to these stages of communication. (Proverb 15:18) Moving hastily can cause avoidable misunderstandings and conflicts. Sometimes, but for the grace and mercy of God, irreparable damage is done.

In any interaction, in any relationship, the common goal should be peace. So, when we feel eager to speak we must be sure we have heard and listened as we should. This will ensure a proper response. Attentive hearing is not always easy, yet we should be quick to do it and not rush through it.
