Legal Rights vs Morally Right

If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not He that pondereth the heart consider it? and He that keepeth thy soul, doth not He know it? and shall not He render to every man according to his works? - Proverb 24:11-12

I think about every geographical region, business, organization, job, and position has laws, rules, policies, guidelines and training. This is completely necessary to establish some form of order and boundaries. Conducting ourselves in order and within boundaries helps to avoid confusion.

Just yesterday, it was announced that no officer would face criminal charges after a man died after being in their custody. Even though a medical examiner found his death to be a homicide, an investigation found that the officers did not violate any law, policy, or training. Cases such as this cause many to question the laws, rules, policies, and training. Protests are calling for change and reform. While this is obviously needed, I say there is another obvious fact; after all this time, after all the tragedies ending with no accountability, it is obvious that the system is doing what it was set up to do. The "loopholes" and "flaws" are deliberate.

Laws and/or policies may permit certain behavior. However, there are situations that call for thinking with the heart. As others have said about the case referenced above, sometimes you should act with compassion. An officer may have a legal, professional right to place someone in a carotid hold or press their knee into someone's neck, but is it the moral, respectful thing to do? As I said in a previous post; just because you have a right does not mean it is right.

There is a higher judge who, according to His word, ponders the heart. He knows the motives behind your actions. You may justify your wrongdoing with a law or policy instead of taking a stand, rejecting, and speaking out against it. However, God will reward every man according to his work (Revelation 22:12). What will be your reward?
